Altar Guild
The Altar Guild is made up of four teams of parishioners who prepare the altar for
Sunday services, baptisms, weddings, and funerals. A team will meet, usually on
Saturday morning, to dust, polish brass, and set up the vessels and hangings for Sunday.
The team comes in on Sunday about a half hour before service to do the final set up.
After the service is finished, the team cleans and puts away the vessels that were used,
covers the altar with a dust cloth, and presents altar flowers to the parishioner who donated them.

The commitment to Altar Guild is about 3 hours a month. There are a few additional
responsibilities to handle, including additional services during Holy Week leading up to Easter
and the special services for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, as well as funerals and weddings.
Serving on the Altar Guild is like getting ready for a Sunday family dinner! Everyone is welcome.

Our Chapter at St. Timothy's considers support of the parish priest as one of its most important
missions. Most recently that support involved setting up a Spiritual Connection Network
during the COVID crisis, restarting the Coffee Hour following Sunday Service, and
re-establishing a Sunday School program.

Bishop's Committee, Altar Guild, Lay Eucharistic Ministry, Lectors, Acolytes, Sunday School,
Community Outreach, and Sunday Coffee Hour. Within the DOK, Diocese of Hawaii, our
Chapter has helped to coordinate Fall and Spring Assemblies, attended Triennials
in Austin, TX, and Baltimore, MD, and has participated in various Province VIII workshops
and activities. The Chapter has representation on the Finance and Bylaws Committees of DOK HI
and two Executive Board Officers.

Sundays where we read and discuss books and open our meetings to anyone at St. Timothy’s
who wishes to join us, or, if we have Daughters in Training, our whole Chapter studies and
refreshes with the new Daughter, using the DOK National Study Guide. Our Thursday Zoom
meetings are Business Meetings in which we prepare for events like Spring and Fall Assemblies
and update our prayer list.

Outreach Ministry
Providing weekly food services for those in need in our community has been a cornerstone
outreach mission of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church for decades. We have endeavored to follow
the teachings of Jesus when he instructed his followers to feed those who are hungry. We serve
our neighbors in need every Tuesday afternoon, but the work to make that happen occurs
throughout the week.

Our Outreach program has had to increase the amount of food provided due to the rise of food
insecurity as a direct result of the Covid pandemic. For example, when Lauralee Kawamata
started managing the program on July 5, 2022, we served 16 people and obtained 300 lbs. of
food from Hawaii Foodbank. On February 27, 2024, we served 105 meals, and our food bags
reached 164 mouths. We obtained over 1,000 lbs. of food that week. The number of people and
families served continues to increase.

Outreach needs more dedicated volunteers to food shop at the Foodbank, load and unload
crates and boxes of food, stock our food pantry, bag the groceries, distribute groceries, cook
meals twice a month, report to Foodbank weekly, monthly, bimonthly, and annually. We
especially could use the help of those who can lift and load items quickly and efficiently, as well
as those who can help distribute the food along the line. We try our very best to keep lines
moving so we can serve all those who come for food. In short, this ministry requires a lot of
hard work and can be strenuous—and yet it is deeply fulfilling to serve our neighbors in need.

St. Timothy's Outreach Team has provided food service to the community for over 35 years. An
Episcopal priest, Claude DuTeil from St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Wahiawa, first started
feeding those in need over 60 years ago. That was dubbed the "Peanut Butter Ministry"
because he used a jar of peanut butter, bread, and instant coffee when he started. He was a
passionate advocate for the needy and worked tirelessly to organize and begin what is known
as IHS, the Institute of Human Services. Located in Iwilei, today IHS is the largest and oldest
emergency shelter on O'ahu.

The founders of St. Timothy's fed countless people at Blaisdell Park for decades. Outreach
was relocated to the church campus some years ago at the state’s request.

important outreach ministry in any way.

Sunday School & Adult Formation
Children’s Sunday School is held in Sumida Hall, directly across the courtyard from the church.
Preschool and elementary-age children are invited to participate. The children open class with a
prayer and read stories from the children’s Bible. They learn about the life and ministry of Jesus
and lessons from the Old and New Testament. To help the children connect with the Bible
stories, lessons are supplemented with fun, kid-friendly activity sheets and a take-home Family
Page from the Spark Activate Faith curriculum. Our teacher leaders are Safe Church trained. We
welcome and encourage anyone interested in working with young children and assisting with
our Sunday School ministry to contact the church office.
